Profile of the Honiton Chamber
The Honiton and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established in 1938, and is the largest Chamber in East Devon with 140 Members. It is a Member of The Association of East Devon Chambers.
Chambers of commerce originated in France in the 17th Century to represent business and their employees, and was a way of lobbying Authorities to make improvements.
This is still part of the role of a Chamber today. Any issues members may have, are discussed and resolved or passed to the Asscociation of East Devon Chambers who then lobby East Devon District Council.
The Chamber is also responsible for promoting the Town and encouraging busines and visitors. Recent successes include;-
Campaigning against increases in parking charges
Working with the Police to secure CCTv for the Town.
Promoting Honiton at the Business SW exhibition
Promoting members businesses at Honiton Agricultual Show.
Co-Ordinating advertising of businesses in county wide magazines
Producing the Town Guide and Accomodation list
Preventing closure of New Street to traffic in the run up to Christmas
Encouraging Coach Operators to bring tourists to the town
Supporting the Community Association and Tourist Information Centre
Building and maintaining the Chamber Website.
Organising the Chamber Children's Carol Service
